Can babies eat spinach banana muffins?

In short, yes! My husband and I practiced Baby Led Weaning with S. Babies are generally ready to start solid foods at around six months old when they show signs that they are developmentally ready. How the food is prepared and served is important, however.

For the spinach banana muffins, I baked them in a mini muffin pan and cut them in half for S. She was able to pick up the pieces herself and independently eat them. I started making them for her when she was around 9 months old, so she had a pretty good pincer grip. For a younger baby, you could serve the muffin in a size and texture appropriate for their stage of development.

One important note: This recipe contains egg, milk, and wheat, which are common food allergens. If your baby hasn’t had these foods before, talk with your pediatrician about introducing allergens safely.

And, of course, I am not a pediatrician or feeding specialist. Before starting solid foods, please talk with your child’s pediatrician if you have questions about whether your baby is ready or how to safely introduce foods.

Tips for making Spinach Banana Muffins for toddlers:

  • I have a mini muffin pan that makes 24 muffins. This size is perfect for toddler fingers and mouths.

  • Muffins will store well for about a week in the refrigerator or 2-3 months in the freezer.

  • Brown bananas are great for any kind of baking.

  • If you have some bananas that are getting brown and soft and you don't have time to bake, freeze them until you want to use them.

  • If you have 3-4 bananas to use up, make one batch of these Spinach Banana muffins and try my No Added Sugar Banana Muffins or Breakfast Cookies too.

What If my toddler won't eat green muffins?

Have a color-sensitive child who won’t eat these because they’re green? This didn’t bother S, but here is what I would do: make them for the first time around a special holiday, like St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas, or the first day of spring. Go on a green color hunt, wear only green clothes, play or sing “It’s Not Easy Being Green”—whatever you can do to celebrate green!

Again, please note that I am not a professional, and this is not meant to be professional advice. If you have concerns about your child refusing certain foods or eating a very limited variety of foods, talk with your pediatrician or a feeding specialist.
