World Kindness Day

Today is World Kindness Day, so I looked up the definition of ‘kindness’ on Webster.com—the sympathetic concern for the well-being of others.

It got me thinking about how I show kindness to others and how it is shown to me. How can I show it more?

What is my daughter going to learn about how to treat others? These are the top ten things that I can do to help her learn to emulate kindness:

  1. Noticing and responding to the needs of others. From little things, like holding the door open for someone behind me to larger things, like contributing to a food drive.

  2. Listening to friends when they need to vent or are looking for advice.

  3. Being conscious of my words. Are my words kind, truthful, and helpful?

  4. Picking up after myself.

  5. Recycling.

  6. Donating books to Little Free Libraries and clothes to a thrift store.

  7. Taking care of cats. (We’re working on gentle pets with B.G. right now. She loves the cats. The cats are still a little freaked out about an erratic tiny human.)

  8. Sharing.

  9. Buying local.

  10. Taking care of myself too, because kindness is not being a doormat. It is also being assertive, having boundaries, and being mindful of my mental health.

All in all, kindness is a lifestyle, not something practiced one day a year. But today is a day to pause and think about how I am putting kindness into action.

Thanks for reading!
