Easy, Homemade Salsa Recipe
A few months ago, I wrote a blog post with some nacho ideas (Happy Nacho Day!)
But what are nachos without a good salsa? Just dry tortilla chips!
Like with the tomato sauce recipe (Easy, Homemade Tomato Sauce), salsa is super easy to prepare. (Pro-tip: buy a ton of tomatoes, roast them in two different pans, and turn one batch into tomato sauce and one into salsa!)
Basic Salsa Recipe
Ingredients:
4-5 tomatoes
2 onions
1 bulb of garlic
1 bell peppers (pictured: 6 mini bell peppers)
Hot peppers (optional)
Steps:
Cut the tops of the tomatoes and bell peppers. Peel the onion and the garlic.
Place everything in a roasting pan. Roast at 300 degrees F for 1 hour.
Let cool. Dice and toss together (chunky style) or dice and place in a blender or food processor (smooth style).
Optional add-ins:
Vinegar (¼ cup). This adds a nice tang and also helps your salsa to last a little longer.
Lemon juice or lime juice
Different types of peppers
Cilantro (If you like it—apparently liking cilantro is genetic)
Oregano
Cumin
Corn
Fruit (mango or pineapple)
You’ll notice there’s no salt!
This is one of the main differences between store-bought and homemade. Unless you seek out a low sodium salsa, salsa from the store is going to be loaded with sodium. Since B.G. started eating solid foods (Has it really been a year already? How is that possible?) we’ve been conscious about how much salt we’re serving and eating. And this is healthier for everyone! Especially if you have a meal like nachos, where the chips and cheese already have a lot of sodium!
Other Benefits to Making Your Own:
Control the spice! At the store, you have three variations of mild, medium, and hot. While different brands might vary slightly, it’s pretty generic. But, if you make your own, you can put heat exactly as you want it. You only have to compromise with the people you’re sharing the salsa with…
The flavors are exactly as you want it. Love garlic? Add more. Hate cilantro? Leave it out! Allergic to citrus? No lemon, no problem. Prefer chunky? Leave them dice. You get the idea.
Quality without the price tag.
Less waste!
Serve up some nachos or tacos or burritos or whatever your favorite dish South of the Border is! And add in some easy, homemade salsa.
