Homemade Baby Puffs— the Experiment
Toddler moms and moms of babies eating solid food, I don’t know about you, but my girl is obsessed with baby puffs. You know, those bite-sized, pre-packaged snacks made especially for kids at this age? And while there are some good brands that have no fillers and are packed full of vitamins and other good nutrients, I hate to buy pre-packaged if I can make it. So I set out to make them.
Recipe:
1cup rice cereal, divide
2 large egg yolks
1/2 cup applesauce
1 cup spinach
2 tablespoon milk
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon baking powder
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line or grease a baking sheet.
Put ½ cup of rice cereal in a food processor or blender. Add All other ingredients and mix well.
Add the other ½ cup of rice cereal. Mix to incorporate, but don’t crush the second part of the cereal.
Transfer mix to a piping bag and pipe the mixture out in dime-sized dots (you can go smaller, but you don’t want them to be much bigger).
Bake for ten minutes then turn the oven down to 250 degrees F. Bake for twenty minutes. Let cool. Yields about two cups worth.
What I learned:
My recipe came from Homemade Baby Puffs - SHK . I decided to double the amount of rice cereal (and not process the second ½ cup as much) because when I followed the recipe strictly, it was too watery. By adding more, I found it to be the perfect consistency for me.
Will I be making these again? Probably not. As a dear friend used to say in jest–-why buy it for $10 when you can make it for $50? While the prices aren’t quite that, the spirit is there. I can get a container of organic baby puffs in a recyclable container for less than $5.00. My ingredients probably cost $5.00 total and didn’t even fill half of the container.
I love piping! It was the first time I tried piping and it was easy and a lot of fun.
So this was a great experiment and if you have a free weekend, or need to occupy your toddler on a rainy afternoon and your kid likes to help in the kitchen (mine does!), go for it! But personally, I will be spending my time making other food.
Thanks for reading!
