Gift-giving Tips this Holiday Season

It’s December first and many people are starting to think about what to give loved ones for Christmas (or another holiday if you happen to be celebrating another one this time of year!).

Personally, gifting is a love language. I also buy gifts for people year-round, especially if I am traveling. Though I’ve been known to pick up something at a store in town, just because it reminds me of a particular person. I keep a gift station at home. (This will probably end up being a locked cabinet when B.G. discovers it and is old enough to investigate!)

However, I can also understand that a lot of people don’t want to fill their home up with more and more stuff. It’s a constant battle to control the clutter! Here’s a few tips for some useful gift ideas:

  • Pay attention to what they need. It doesn’t have to be boring, like a vacuum cleaner, though maybe that is the perfect gift. But maybe their favorite Christmas sweater is getting thread-worn or a wine glass from a set recently broke.

  • Give a hobby-supporting gift. My husband builds gaming miniatures, so superglue is a go-to stocking stuffer. Or, maybe they’d like some start-up supplies to try out a new hobby?

  • Give food. If someone is struggling economically, some pantry staples could be an amazing gift. But also, everyone loves baked goods or perhaps a basket/plate of their favorite food (a cheese plate, chocolate basket, fruit basket, etc.). Of course, when preparing this, please be mindful of diets and allergies!

  • Subscription service. Offer to pay for Netflix for a year or give a magazine subscription.

  • Experience gifts. When I was a child, someone gave me ten passes to the local ice rink. I had so much fun skating all winter long! This could also be a fun way to spend time together with a loved one.

  • Going out to dinner (or a food delivery if you’re not feeling people-y). Combine the experience with food.

  • Gift certificates. So they can use it on whatever they want/need.

Happy Holidays! (and happy gifting!)
